SNC Review - From Nigel

9 June 2008 No Comment

SNC….. This is the first week post the “SNC” première, Sex in The City….. and women around the world are feeling empowered, sassy and full of themselves…. and they should. Movies like SNC commemorate everything I find attractive in a woman. strength, intelligence, self assuredness, power, sophistication, class and of course, sexiness….. SNC celebrates the emancipation of the 21st century woman. Women who can run their own successful businesses, compete with men in the corporate jungles, board rooms and legal systems across the country… women who can write, professionally, about feelings, observations, and emotions and not get slapped with the sentimental sissy tag…. And more importantly, people actually take their views seriously… what a wonderful depiction of today’s modern woman…..

So why was it that with such a superb portrayal of contemporary women didn’t ONE of these women take responsibility for their actions? One woman blames her insanely handsome, hopelessly devoted (part time) meal ticket (I assume she had other clients) and lover for busting his ass and working a crazy amount of hours….as the reason she has gained weight and has wandering eyes ….. The super nova, that has all the other story lines in her gravitational pull, takes her relationship that is simple yet elegant, searing yet surreal a relationship crafted from years of knowing each other, a relationship built for two….and magnifies it until it’s the talk of the town… and this aint no ordinary town…this is THE one only NYC….. and then wonders why her high profile lover, of two previous marriages, needs reassurance that the effortless, easy flowing relationship, the two of them shared and cobbled together would still be intact once the wedding guest went home….. …but what bothered me more than having that freaking pop corn kernel stuck between my teeth during the whole freaking movie was Miranda………(we will just skip, the other one…you know…. the ditzy blonde played by a brunette… with the adopted kleptomaniac) . Miranda ,the red headed, Harvard educated, legal eagle…and the voice of reason and objectivity among the group….Miranda, had a problem…. after working 12 hour days, raising a family and commuting to Manhattan everyday…. She lost interest in sex…( I’m sure there are readers who can relate). However, her husband Steve hadn’t…..and apparently after months of discussion the situation hadn’t gotten any better but in fact, had become more desperate….. at least for Miranda’s husband.Steve, took matters into his own hands…. And had a one time meaningless affair… Now Steve may have been stupid in seeking something perfectly normal, humanly expected and one of Darwin’s basic human needs outside of the union …….but Miranda’s self righteousness and indignation, upon being told, was enough for me to throw my bag of popcorn at the screen….…. and for her to completely ignore her role in Steve’s indiscretion was beyond belief…. How could Miranda have been surprised? How could she NOT know that she was pushing her husband away? How could she NOT take a least partial responsibility for his actions? For as far as we have come as a society….where we are willing to accept women as “cougars”, women employing gigolo’s and Ashley Madison…. Isn’t time for women to also accept responsibility with their new found sexual liberation? For all the progress we have made as a society in our acceptance of the ever changing gender roles… SNC was made relevant because we were able to bare witness to the changes……SNC iconic status was cemented by being the preverbal fly on the wall during those women only conversations that us men were always dying to hear. The conversations amongst our heroines always was so direct and honest l wanted SNC to also show how our beloved characters emotionally matured and grew as well.……but NO, the Miranda character as with the others…went back to the tried and true formulas…that they, the women, due to no fault of their own…had somehow been wronged by a man. and this travesty against women is continued on in perpetuity.

Unfortunately, the script, producers and director all went for the easy cliché answers in the end and left this SNC fan feeling …like he had been cheated on…..
