jigabooMy next pet peeve is a term that people started using a few years ago.  I’ve heard women use it in all kinds of situations.  And  it still irritates the hell out of me.  It’s not because it’s an Ebonics term.  It’s because it makes no sense.

It’s the word Boo.  Yep, one word that’s more irritating to me that any other word.  It’s short for the word Jigaboo.  And since I’m not black as in, dark as night, don’t call me Boo.  I can’t say who started this trend but it seriously makes me krazy.  Now I’ve been known to use the ‘N’ word during my life, but when I hear a woman call me Boo I want to run.  I know I’m far from being known as a dark skinned guy.  The idea of Boo reminds me of some 1960’s horror movie.  The kind where the darker than dark guy jumps out the Mississippi woods with a hatchet to chase all trespassers away.  If some one can explain how calling me Boo means you really love me, I’d like to hear it.  I like it’s original use, to scare someone.  Maybe if you’re using the word to say that someone is ugly, I could understand that.  Or maybe they are using it as a abreviation to calling someone ‘boo-boo’, aka Yogi Bear’s side kick.  I’ve thought about this 1000’s of times and it makes no sense to me.

    I agree with you. The first time a black man called me boo, I looked at him like he was crazy. I asked him why he called me that, and he said that it was his way of telling me I was his girlfriend and calling me baby. I would’ve much rather heard, “I think you’re my girlfriend, baby”.

    Worse than that for me…is having a man tell me I’m a “dime piece”. Huh?? I know what it means, but come on….it’s like he’s telling me I’m only worth 10 cents!! It’s like taking every bit of class I have and buying 2 pieces of bubble gum with it.

    And what about “momma”? I hate that! Answer the phone and hear, “what’s up momma?” I’m not your mother. I didn’t change your diaper when you were a baby…..Can you please explain that one to me?? Am I wrong in thinking that calling a woman “momma” is sexist?

    And why do some men want women to call them daddy?? That’s just all kinds of wrong. I can’t imagine having sex with a man and screaming “Give it to me, daddy!!”

    learn something new every day huh? I honestly never knew that is where the “term of edearment” came from. Not like I have ever been very fond of it because it’s just weird and didnt make sense.

    knowing that now though it will make me think twice next time someone uses it.

    The term Boo is rude and disrespectful.

    I get offended by the casual use of redneck for certain white people. The word implies so much that may not be true.

    Reggie I find it interesting that you are offended by the casual use of “redneck” but on Wednesday you titled a post “Redneck Calamari”

    It all boils down to ignorance…people aren’t familiar with the origin and how it was first used a term of endearment in the South. It was used to denote which female slaves the slave masters were privately screwing, while still holding on to it’s original origin of jigaboo. And you know how we do it in the South, we take every chance we get to redefine a term…that’s what happened here, and it spread like wildfire…the younger generations are just ignorant to its origin and latched on to the sentiment.

    I personally think the term lacks class so I don’t use it and don’t allow my self to be called that. I’m not even a fan of baby since I’m a grown ass woman, but hey to each his own. Although boo is not necessarily a pet peeve of mine I can understand your frustration.

    Very true…but…blacks get to use the “N” word and whites can’t. Blacks know the context,

    I get to use the redneck word because I know the context in which it is coming from.

    I love this dialog with you.

    I’ll be in St Croix in February and we must meet.

    @ Teacia either was boo/jigaboo i’m not down with it. You can sprinkle sugar on bullshyt and at the end of the day it’s still bullshit. I’ve never liked it even if it’s short for something else. I’m no slave…so there’s no need for a female to call me any thing but my name, unless they refer to me as ‘bone daddy’ haha… j/k

  8. no imageTeacia (Check me out!) Says:

    Oh I’m not condoning or justifying its use…I was just giving the origin of the sentiment. I too agree that it shoukdn’t be used.

    …bone daddy huh…now exactly how big is that bone?

    @Reggie
    Just because black people use the “n” word doesn’t mean it should be used or that it isn’t offensive

    and just because you are white doesnt mean that you should throw the term redneck around…

    and redneck isn’t nearly as offensive as the “n” word…

    @eathan… “bone daddy” ???

    I thought boo was a shortened form of “boyfriend” or even beau, as in “He’s my beau.” Had no idea.
