The last month has been a very hectic and stressful. For anyone who hasn’t been keeping up, Dirt Bike Boy has been sick. The most recent episode took me away from writing and work. I was left to focus on him 110%. I’m not complaining, it’s just what parents do when one of their kids are sick.
Dirt Bike Boy spent a total of 8 days in the hospital. The first 4 days were the most stressful. He was in isolation and restricted to his hospital room. He had surgery within 48 hours of being admitted. The procedure was to remove part of the infection and give the infectious disease specialists an idea of what his body was fighting. His mother remained bedside for 4 days and I stayed for the 1st two days. Dirt Bike Boy had some level of a fever for 5 days and was practically motionless.
Towards the end of day 5 his spirits turned. He had a few cousins and relatives come by. He didn’t say much, but just having a room full of relatives that were goofing off and telling stories made him feel better. This was the 1st time I’ve seen them since the divorce and it was still a fun afternoon. I was surprised there were no awkward moments.
After 5 days of testing, they had no answers. They still don’t have any answers. The only thing I can be thankful for is, he’s much better. It appears that Dirt Bike Boy will have a full recovery. On day 6 he was walking around the hospital. He was craving steaks, hot dogs, burgers, french fries, ice cream and cereal.
After spending 8 days in the hospital, I’m happy that he’s going home. Dirt Bike Boy is still on doctors orders to be out of school for another 2 weeks. The school district has assigned him a private teacher that will come to the house. According to the school district, 1 hour with the teacher will equate to 1 school day. Since he’s already missed a month of school, he should be able to catch up and complete the school year with his classmates.
While we were at the children’s hospital, we had a chance to visit with cancer kids on our hospital floor. Even though our experienced started out to be very serious and life threatening, it’s not as critical as the Oncology patients. I encourage everyone to spend a few hours with them, they will really appreciate every minute you spend with them.
I also want to thank everyone who left comments, emails, yahoo messages, twitter messages, and even smoke signals. The encouragement was very uplifting over the last week. And I also appreciate your prayers and wishes too. Thanks again.
And now I can get back to my regular IDW content. After spending 8 days at the hospital, I have some interesting things to write about. The hospital was a multicultural and interracial experience. In normal Eathan/IDW fashion, I was in the middle of it all.
Stay tuned for details.
