Biracial Tanning

by Eathan

The last couple days in Dallas has been hot.? It was 90 degrees.? And since it’s only April, I thought I was going to die.? But the warm weather has created a interracial topic for discussion.? Tanning.? Most of the time when I hear a woman talk about tanning, I think of a white woman.? Practically every white woman I know loves to have a good tan.? Of course it’s not the kind of tan where her skin looks and feel like a fine piece of leather.? All of my life I’ve watched them sun bathe or visit the tanning salon.? They usually want to keep their glow through the colder winter months.? And I must admit, I’ve always appreciated a woman with a nice tan.

The reason I mention this is because, I was at Dirt Bike Boy’s house the other day.? It was hot.? There wasn’t a cloud in the sky.? It was a sunny day.? As I walked into the backyard, I noticed his older bi-racial sister in a bikini getting a tan.? She had a beach towel on the ground.? She had her sunglasses on.? And it appeared she’d been there for a couple hours.? I did a double take.? WTF??!!? Are you serious?? I tried not to laugh, but it was funny.? I couldn’t believe that a bronzed skinned, biracial girl/woman was actually trying to get a tan.? Is this normal?

I’ve known Dirt Bike Boy’s sister since she was 10yrs old.? And I must say that Dirt Bike Boy and his siblings have the same skin color.? All of them bronze easily if they spend the afternoon at the park.? It didn’t seem to make any sense to tan.? Honestly, most white women would give their new Coach bag to have that skin color.

Since I know her mother didn’t spend her summers tanning or attempting to maintain a tan, I’m wondering where the tanning influence comes from.? I suppose it could come from her white friends, I’m not exactly sure.? I asked Dirt Bike Boy, “how often does your sister tan?”?? He didn’t know.

So now I’m curious has the bi-racial, bronze skinned look expired?? Has it gone out of style like the light skinned De Barge look did in the 80′s?

  • Huh?

Women of color (though a lighter hue) who live in the islands tan all the time. We love the rosiness that it leaves. Plus you can't be caught up with getting too dark when you love the water. C'est la vie, it ain't important.

If a biracial girl is "yellow" it seems as natural as a white woman to tan. My 12 yr old daughter sees me tan in the summer months but she knows it only takes a few days in the michigan summer sun for her shade to darken dramatically. She never wears sunblock nor is she conscious of it even though she is extremely developed for her age. Her skin changes so quickly in fact, that I have been embarrassed when picking her up from a week at summer camp and not recognizing her instantly from a distance. I, on the other hand have to constantly work on my tan, and with age, it seems more difficult to get that honey complexion. I avoid tanning in the winter months just because it seems like a bit much for your skin to be exposed all year every year. Ive noticed that white women in warmer states get massive amounts of freckles (mostly on their chest and shoulders) that almost become like skin blotches from over exposure. My daughter on the other hand gets chocolatey even though she never actually lays out! I've been told that she still needs sunscreen although she doesn't burn...what do you think?
  • That's interesting. I will admit to using sunscreen. I use it, Alpha Boy uses it and even my mother uses it. We get dark easily and we burn twice as easy. Alpha Boy learned that tough lesson 2 yrs ago. He had a nice sunburn after spending the day at the lake.

Try SPF30. It works nicely. ;)
  • There are very light coloured girls here who do tan but I think its more of the act than actually trying to tan you know?

But for the most part people of other colours here tend to cover up when the son comes out!
  • It's the act of tanning? Does that mean it's relaxing or meditating therapy to tan? I've never understood it, unless you're trying to change your appearance.
  • Tanning here is like a cool thing to do - so you do it even if you dont want to tan!

LOL doesnt really make sense but alot of girls do it cos they are at the beach and thats what you do!

My oldest daughter likes to tan...she likes her body darker than her face...so, if she's sunning her front she keeps her face shaded...Don't ask me why she likes it...she's the darkest of the three without the sun...but I have noticed she has more dark friends than the other two...and youngest (who looks as if she could be mixed with Mexican) has more Mexican friends...maybe it's their desire to look more like who they relate to??? I dunno...
Curiously, my oldest is proud of her tan lines...I don't know what that's about...
  • They show off their tan lines? lol That's cute. Friends have a lot of influence on kids.

I like to tan through the winter, about once a week, not only because it keeps my glow up (I tan easily), but because it improves my mood. Maybe Dirt Bike Boy's sister has discovered the same thing. People can't manufacture enough vitamin D without help from the sun. Vitamin D deficiency is linked to depressed mood and decreased energy. The only way to get enough vitamin D is through a large dose supplement or exposure to UV light.

Many people don't realize that it's the sun that gives them that rosy, feel-good sensation when they are outside. Dr. Christiane Northrup, an OB/GYN, described on an episode of "Oprah" how the sun has been "villified" in today's society, when most women need a little dose of sun just about every day (not to the point of burning, of course) to make vitamin D and ward off depression.

Of course, she may just like her skin a little darker than it is naturally, too. I have black and biracial friends (men and women) who like themselves a few shades darker, even though most people would be happy just to be half as dark as they are! I had a black college friend who used to tan with iodine and baby oil to get this beautiful bronze color. I have to admit, I was jealous.
  • I've heard in cold weather states people tan more to counteract the power of depression. I'm not sure what the reason is for us Texans. lol
  • That's funny. My daughter has olive skin from her Italian mom, so she's tan even if she stays indoors. Her friends are all jealous because they have to sweat for hours in the sun to come close to her beautiful skin. My daughter plays sports, so she's outdoors a lot, but she doesn't often just lay there tanning. I think she's happy enough with the color she has.

  • The olive skin is beautiful. She'll make everyone jealous of her skin color soon enough. ;)
