Swine Flu Close To Home

by Eathan

Everyone is alarmed over the Swine Flu and it’s hitting close to home.? The Dallas/Fort Worth area is on high alert.? Within the last 24 hours several school districts in the area have closed for the next 7 days.? It was shocking to know that one of the schools closing is in a neighboring community.? I haven’t had a chance to talk to Alpha Boy, but one of? the schools is across the street from his old school.

I’m sure we know some of the families that are affected by the school closings.? As much as I hate to buy into the news media’s scare tactics, I’m on high alert.? I’m even paranoid about Dirt Bike Boy’s allergies.? I have them taking extra care when washing hands, using hand wipes and Michael Jackson masks.? Ok, we haven’t really gone as far as the masks yet.? But it’s funny to think about.

I’m starting to wonder if Michael Jackson and all of his craziness was ahead of the medical curve by 20 years. ? Or maybe it’s just another way for Grey’s Anatomy to promote the show.

Since the first part of this year has been filled with such Dirt Bike Boy’s medical mystery, I’m just focused on keeping all of us healthy.? I had a long discussion with guest writer, Priscilla San Remo, regarding the media exaggeration of the Swine Flu.? She brought to my attention that MRSA, staff infection, is a greater risk to my kids than the Swine Flu.? I had to think about for a bit, but she’s right.? Both of my kids play sports.? And MRSA is a major problem among athletes.? And there’s no cure!? At least there’s a vaccine for the Swine Flu.

Should I join the public masses and purchase a Michael Jackson mask and glove?? Or is this a media frenzy?

It makes me wonder if it was around here earlier than when they announced it...I was sick with what they called a upper respiratory infection in Feb...and they gave me antibiotics and they didn't help AT ALL...so, I went back and they told me if the antibiotics didn't help and I had a fever, that I had the flu...I was in the bed for almost two weeks...and it was the worst cough EVER! I lost like 20 lbs...Then everyone around me got it, too...The people in the dr. office said that the flu shot they gave us was for one strain and we all caught another strain...I'm telling you, the "Other" strain was the Swine Flu...they just didn't call it that....

I heard that the mask don't do anything to stop the virus. That the virus smaller then the weaves in the mask. Here is what the CDC has and what I had heard was the best measures to help not catch the virus.

    Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

Stay home when you are sick.
If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.

    Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

    Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

    Practice other good health habits.
Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

Hope this helps. I am more worried about the schools closing down and what to do with the kids for a week or more while they are closed.
  • I'm glad you've shared the list. I'm sure plenty of parents are scrambling to figure out what to do. I'm just trying to decide what to do about going to the Mavs game... there's gonna be some germs at the arena. ughhh

I can tell you this I buy from the 2 largest distribution centers United Stationary and SP Richards and they are both out of hand sanitizer every where!

I think it is better to be safe than sorry one of the school closings is in LISD and my son's attend LISD schools so they both are home with me today and tomorrow and we will see what happens over the weekend if I will let them go back Monday.

That might sound extreme but my oldest only has 1 class today because of TAKS testing and it is sports medicine. He has no sports going on so he is safer here at home with me I hope! lol My youngest is done with his TAKS testing and he just had MONO in December and it takes 6 months for their bodies to completely recover so not taking any chances here! :)
  • Yeah, Alpha Boy used to attend LISD... so that school isn't far. I'm cautious with Dirt Bike Boy because his immune system is still recovering. So I totally understand you being safe than sorry.

I think there are over 150k students out of school for the next week in the DFW area. Wow... that's a lot.
