I woke up Friday morning ready to start my legal battle with Frisco ISD. There was a certain calm before that give you peace of mind. Since January, I have maintained thorough medical and attendance records. It seems to be a clear cut case for my defense, but when it comes to the legal system there is a slight bit of uncertainty.
Since the Frisco ISD has calculated 35 truancy offenses, I decided to consult with several lawyer friends. The case seems to be a bit ridiculous to everyone, including some of the school faculty. But since the legal battle has begun, my communication with the school administration has practically come to a complete halt. The principal of Christie, Manual Gonzales has become a distant memory. He avoids me like the plague. The assistant principal remains distant. She walks 20 feet from me. Dirt Bike Boy’s teacher is still polite and nice. The one person that suffers the most is Dirt Bike Boy. He knows that there is a legal battle brewing.
The hearing before Judge Lewis was scheduled to begin at 230pm. So I arrived a 5 minutes early, because most hearings with the school never start on time. Dirt Bike Boy, his mother and yours truly are sitting in the waiting area. I’m focused and prepared to give my Johnny Cochran closing, “if the hospital gown fits… you must acquit.” After waiting for 15 minutes, Judge Lewis asked to speak to me in private. Hmmm, I wonder what he wants. Do I have a mystery warrant that I don’t know about?? Am I being held in contempt of court already?
He informs me that the truancy officer for Frisco ISD has been involved in a car accident. She has been taken to the hospital and the hearing will be reset. I received an apology and a hand shake. It was the strangest thing I’ve ever experienced in a court room. I’ve never had a Judge shake my hand or apologize. Leaving the court room, Dirt Bike Boy asked, “What’s going on?” I had to briefly explain that Dad would have to come back to court on another day.
On a side note, Dirt Bike Boy had his academic records reviewed by the Frisco school board. He has good grades and they have decided to let him advance to the next grade. At this point, I’m pissed off that this truancy fiasco is wasting my time and money. I want to know who at Frisco ISD made the decision to make this a legal battle. Dirt Bike Boy will nor return to a Frisco ISD school next year. I’ve also made a decision to contact some of my friends in the local media. I believe if I go on a media campaign that would put some pressure on Frisco ISD to go away. If being in the hospital on doctors orders isn’t enough to be excused absence, then what is?
