Biracial Hair Issues

by Eathan

Even if you don’t speak about it publicly, when it comes to interracial dating and kids, hair is always a issue.  And like most biracial kids, my boys are having some hair issues.  Alpha Boy and Dirt Bike Boy have 2 different grades of hair.  Alpha Boy hair is course, but not like mine.  Dirt Bike Boy has big curls.  Either way it creates challenges for me.

Alpha Boy has realized that hair isn’t his strong point and wants to keep it fairly short. Since he plays sports, keeping it short also makes him feel 10 degrees cooler.  I’ve asked him several times if he wanted to grow it out and possibly get it styled differently.  He looked at me like I was crazy.  In the past his biggest frustration has been with the lack of hair products that works for him.  But it appears that he likes the shorter cuts.  He proudly tells the stylist to fade me to a one.

On the other hand, Dirt Bike Boy has grown a full sized Jew-fro.  And I say that with great compassion, but you’d have to see it to believe it.  His hair is bigger than his face is round.  It’s sandy blonde color and huge.  Every time I see him I just shake my head and he smiles.

Alpha Boy joked, “i’m going to cut off your hair while you’re sleeping.”

Dirt Bike Boy yelled, “I’m gonna tell Dad.”

“We need to figure out something to do with that Afro you’re rocking”, I said.

“His hair is nappy Dad”, gloated Alpha Boy.

I had to laugh when I heard Alpha Boy.  I had to show him that if his hair was nappy, you couldn’t run your fingers through it without catching a snag or nap.  It seems that someone didn’t clarify what nappy hair meant.  Once we clarified the definition he said, “I still have the urge to cut his hair when he falls asleep.”  Of course I wouldn’t let that happen.

So I called Dirt Bike Boy’s mother to tell her I’m going to get his hair cut before he goes back to school.  She informed me that he wants to grow it out like a surfer/skater dude.  WTF???  Are you kidding?  ”He should get corn rolls”, I said.  She then went on to tell me that his older sister straightens his hair when I’m not around.  Are you kidding?  Dirt Bike Boy is using the Al Sharpton hair kit?

So now I feel like my Grandmother.  MaDea  always said, “good hair is when you have it.. bad hair is when you have no hair at all.”

Haha Eathan, I thought only Jews qualify to have Jewfros! :)

Well,I guess it doesn't matter if the school district doesn't make him cut it. Here in the city I've never seen the dress code say anything about hair for boys or girls.

But growing up in Kaufman, there was a strict dress code that specifically prohibited dreadlocks, braids, afros beyond one inch, ponytails, and and hair extending beyond the shirt collar.

I'm surprized that they haven't been taken to court for targeting specific racial groups with their policies.
  • OK ok I lied. I guess I'd figure that if you're going to let one boy make decisions about how he wants his hair, the other should have the same freedom, too. No matter what it is he wants.
  • I'm a word/grammar nazi and while I have nothing useful to contribute, I have to say that the term is corn "rows"; they look like rows of corn growing in the field. Pet Peeve. Sorry!
  • I wanted to see who would catch it. It took almost all day before someone caught it. ;)
