Sooner or later a father has to step in and correct the attitude of a son. That day arrived for Dirt Bike Boy last week. It was an accumulation of bad behavior and his mother’s lack of discipline. I was alerted by a brief conversation with his mother. She mentioned that he had after school tutoring, as a result of not doing his homework for the last 2 weeks.
My natural response to this revelation was, “why did they wait 2 weeks before they notified you?” As logical as that sounds, I didn’t find out the answer for a few more days. A couple days later I decided to visit the school and his teacher. I could tell that something had been going on, because Dirt Bike Boy let out a big sigh and held his head down. Within 5 minutes I was well informed on the problem.
On a typical school day, Dirt Bike Boy is sent home with homework. Once he arrives at home, he tell his mother that he doesn’t have any home work. She assumes that he’s truthful and doesn’t worry about anything further. When he goes back to school the following day, he tells the teacher there wasn’t enough time at home to get it done. This process continued for 2 weeks, until the teacher called. 
I assured the teacher that the problem would be resolved. And that’s when things for Dirt Bike Boy drastically changed. After dealing with Frisco ISD last year, I decided that I was going to take control of the problem. My approach was much more drastic than he expected. When we arrived at his mother’s, I instructed him to go inside and pack a bag. While he was inside, I called his mother and told her the news.
Dirt Bike Boy is changing his address. He was no longer living with mom. He’s living with me, until further notice. It doesn’t matter if it’s a week, a month or longer. I’ve taken total control of the situation. At first, he displayed some resistance – crying, pouting and having a tantrum. Within 20 minutes, he realized that I wasn’t affected by any of his ploys. It’s 5 days and his behavior has changed. His homework is done.
Thursday evening I was having dinner with Alpha Boy and Dirt Bike Boy. Dirt Bike Boy asked, “when am I going back to my mom’s?” I replied, “you’re with me until further notice.. could be 1 week .. could be 1 month.. it depends on if your behavior.” Alpha Boy shook his head, “one day you’ll learn.. dad don’t play.”
So with my daily routine totally changed, I’m adjusting my dating life accordingly.
