After all of the crazy things that have happened in the last month or so, there was a bright spot in my life. Of course, it’s one of my boys. Last year Alpha Boy called me to spend the day with him on Mother’s Day. We had a great time and it some fashion that was one of the ultimate compliments a single dad could get. So this year for Alpha Boy’s birthday he had a choice of things he could do or get. As a teenage boy who loves sports, he chose going to the NBA All Star game.
It was a great choice, since I wanted to go also. I purchased several tickets and took one of his high school friends. I didn’t realize it at first, but the date for the game was Valentine’s Day. How fitting that I spend Valentine’s Day with my son.
When we arrived at Cowboy Stadium, I gave them instructions to keep their cellphones on vibrate. I also told them that I would text them when I was ready to leave and to meet me at this entrance/exit. The were excited and hyped. Alpha Boy and his wing man went one direction and I went the other. I thought that a normal 15 yr old wouldn’t want to hang out with his dad at such a large sporting event. I mean, I would’ve never stayed with my dad at his age. So I tracked down an ex-girlfriend that was working at a beer stand. I also ran into a high school classmate that played in the NFL for 13 years. Next thing I know, my phone is vibrating. It’s Alpha Boy and his wing man.

Alpha Boy – “where are you?”
Me – “On level 2 right now.”
Alpha Boy – “which side.. we want to hang out with you”
I was totally shocked. I couldn’t believe that these two “wanna be playas” wanted to hang out with me. We watched Shikira and Alica Keys perform at 1/2 time. We posted on the wall and watched people walking by. The evening turned into a lesson on girls. They realized from my ex-girlfriend that dad is classified as a player. She played it off as a joke, but they listened closely to her describe all the social reasons why women like me.
Eventually the evening turned into meeting celebrities. I had the chance to meet Dominique Wilkens & Doug E. Fresh. Even thought Alpha Boy and wingman didn’t know who Doug E. Fresh was, I explained that he is to Hip-Hop history as Eminem is to modern day Hip-Hip. Immediately they wanted to take pictures and get an introduction.
The evening ended with me dropping off Alpha Boy at home. As I help him get his stuff out of the trunk of the car, he gives me a big hug and said, “Thanks dad.. this is one of the best birthday gifts.. EVER! And you’re cool.”
I’m still in shock over that one. But it’s one of those moments that I won’t forget.
