As I’ve said before, I’m not of the criminal mind and I never will be. But I have been irresponsible in the past and didn’t pay a ticket, had a bad check when I was 18 and even was in contempt of court during my divorce. So that means I’ve spent a night or two in jail previous to my recent arrest. Since it’s Friday, I decided to leave some advice to all those who might get into legal trouble. Even if it’s something minor or major, this list will apply.
- Contact your closest family member. This one is self explanatory. Your family can contact your job and possibly an attorney/bail bonds. Since you won’t have access to make unlimited phone calls, you will need someone you can trust to make a few phone calls. I don’t think I need to say anything else on this one.
- Since you can only make collect calls, try to have 3 home phone numbers. This is a interesting thought during the age of cell phones. While my jail visit was brief, I only had 1 person who had a home phone number. He was the only person I could contact to handle any personal business that I needed to get done. And believe me, I am grateful that he did.
- Make sure you have your wallet. While most arrests are for minor/misdemeanor offenses, if you have cash and even debit cards, you can bond yourself out of jail. I was surprised that there was a ATM in the jail intake area. So if you needed to pay for a ticket or small bond, you could be released within a short period of time.
- Don’t confess to anything. I’ve watched Law and Order and CSI to know this. It doesn’t matter if you’re talking to another inmate, jailer, or police officer… don’t talk about your legal situation without your lawyer.
- Wear long sleeves. If you have a choice of changing shirts, make sure you wear long sleeves. I’ve spoken to several law officials and most jails are cold. That means they keep the temperature below 70 degrees. And even to someone who enjoys the air conditioning, it’s a bit chilly.
This list only applies if you expect to be in jail 24-48 hours. If you’re going to be in jail for an extended stay, you will probably need a different list.
Any other reader suggestions?
