Teacher With Biracial Child Is Fired

by Eathan

I’ve been following a news story out of St. Cloud Florida.  When I first heard this story, I had to listen to it 2 times.  I could tell that something didn’t add up.  And I was right.  In April 2009 Jarretta Hamilton informed her employer (Southland Christian School) that she would take a 6 week leave for the birth of a child, because she was pregnant.  Her employer asked her when her child was conceived.  Hamilton replied that it was 3 weeks before her wedding night.

Long story short, Jarretta Hamilton was fired by the Southland Christian School.  The reason was because of their strict morality rules that prohibit fornication.  Just looking at the facts, I’m shaking my head.  Jarretta & her husband had a long and well planned wedding.  And like most adults, they enjoy sex.  Since neither one of them were virgins and had been married previously, sex would be a normal part of their relationship.  But something still told me there is something else to this story.

And to add insult to injury, the school informed the parents and her 4th grade students the reason why she was fired.  I’m not a resident in the local St. Cloud community, but I don’t think her 4th grader class would even care.  I wish I could’ve been apart of the board meeting that planned her dismissal.  I just want to know their side of the story besides what they’ve released via their lawyer.

After a quick google search on this story, I found the following picture of Jarretta and her husband.

This whole situation seems suspect.  I can’t believe that a employer would even ask something so personal regarding the conception date of her child.  I’ve thought about it and played the scenerio over and over in my mind to figure out how this conversation started.

“Hey Jarretta… you’re baby is beautiful.  When did ya man tap you up?”

“Congratulations Jarretta.  You and your man must’ve got wild on your honeymoon, cause it’s almost 9 months later.”

“Jarretta.. I was doing some math and you got laid before your wedding”

I couldn’t help but wonder what is the racial demographics of the St. Cloud area.  So I found some stats from the 2000 census.

  • White: 90.27%
  • Black:  2.07%
  • Native American: 0.47%
  • Biracial: 2.06%

So is this a morality issue or is a religious issue?  What are your thoughts?

Sounds like a racial issue...I'm sure that some where she can go to the employment commission and fight for her unemployment...also given the overwhelming facts that we see, she might can take it to the higher court just to make a statement about how racism creeps up still today...It's definitely a discrimination lawsuit....all I can say is wow...
On the religious tip...Jesus didn't win souls by humiliation and guilt...he won souls with compassion and love...Jesus ate with the fishermen, tax collectors and a prostitute...the religious establishment of the day that twisted the word of God angered the Savior...I wonder how many souls would be saved if more religions left the JUDGMENT up to God and loved more???
    But that's just me....
  • Yeah Nephi... you ganked my Icon..lol

As I said this whole situation seems suspect.

It's a morality and religious issue. Christian schools have different rules than public schools. I'm pretty sure the teachers sign a morality contract. My first few years of school were at a Christian school and they would have told us something like what was described. They use humiliation to bring salvation. One of the things we were taught was that if our parents weren't married, they would go to hell. So imagine being a six years old and thinking your parents were going to burn for all eternity. That's just the way they are.
  • Well I'm a bit confused because there are several court cases where this type of action didn't hold up in court because of the difference between a church and a employer. Since the school has over 15 employees they are under federal guidelines. So it makes me wonder why they would even attempt something like this..
  • @Sweeeet,
I had a feeling you knew where that was and would leave a comment. Where are you now? Texas or Florida?

Doesn't surprise me one bit...that's by Disney and a suburb of Orlando. Not a very interracial friendly city at all...glad I moved!
