As an active father, I’m always encouraging Alpha Boy to expand his horizons. And for the most part he has my spirit of adventure. Recently he went with a few friends to the Texas Motor Speedway for a Indy race. I’ve mentioned before that I love fast cars, but I don’t enjoy going to the races. It’s a bit boring and dull for the amount of time I could spend watching it at home.
Well Alpha Boy had his eyes opened to a different world. I could tell from his facebook status that he was in a state of shock.
“At Texas motor speed way to watch the Texas 500. got suite tickets. This is the most white people in one place I’ve ever seen in my life lol”
The reason why I laugh is because most of the time my kids are exposed to a blended lifestyle. Every place we go is usually a diversified crowd. So the fact that he went to a race track that has over 100,000 people in attendance and felt overwhelmed was funny. I began to watch other people on his facebook comment on where they were sitting and how many black people were in their section.
Going to the Speedway is much different than going to a Mavs game or the NBA All-Star Game. The raceway has acres and acres of parking. The parking lots are full of RV’s and mobile homes, where people spend the weekend camping out. Even at a NFL game, we can only tailgate for a few hours before the game. And at best, the basketball or football game will only last 3 hours. So it’s a totally different atmosphere.
I’ve decided to reverse things during football season this year. I told Alpha Boy that I would take him to the annual Bayou Classic football game. That is a football game between two predominately black college schools in Dallas. The festivities include the half time Battle of the Bands and the pregame Greek Show (he thinks it will be like the movie Stomp The Yard or Drumline). Alpha Boy mentioned he’s most comfortable when his surroundings are diverse and blended. The Bayou Classic will be a interesting event for him.
Is Alpha Boy and his friends the only ones that play “spot the brotha” at the race track? How many black people have you seen at Nascar or Indy races?
